I just came across a task listing from Uber AI Solutions offering KES 0.10 per task for digital image collection. To put that into perspective, KES 0.10 is about $0.00077 USD, less than one-tenth of a cent. At that rate, a worker would need to complete around 1,300 tasks just to earn $1, and even 10,000 tasks would only make about $7.70.
Freelancers are expected to use their own internet, devices, time, and effort to collect and submit data that ultimately trains commercial AI systems. Yet compensation like this suggests that the people doing the work are being treated as disposable rather than valued contributors to the AI ecosystem.
Remote work platforms often promote themselves as opportunities that empower global freelancers, especially in emerging markets. But offering rates that amount to fractions of a cent per task undermines that promise and sends a troubling message about how companies value digital labor. If companies truly want to build responsible and sustainable AI systems, fair compensation for contributors should be the baseline, not an afterthought.
So I have to ask: Is Uber AI Solutions actually serious about offering legitimate remote work opportunities, or are freelancers simply expected to work for virtually nothing?
